 Happy Fall Everyone,

Thank you all for the special birthday wishes and gifts. I felt very spoiled and loved being here on my birthday to celebrate with everyone!

Conferences: I look forward to meeting with all of you the week of Oct. 7th for conferences to discuss your child and the progress he/she has made. See you at your appointed time here in our classroom.
Book Fair- During conference week, our library is turned into the Scholastic Book Fair so please so down and enjoyed purchasing some great books for your child and gifts for friends.
Field Trip- Thank you for sending in your child's permission slip and donation. We are looking forward to our first field trip of the year. Sadly, we still need drivers for the field trip so please take a look at your schedule and see if you are able to help.
Language Arts- RTI program started this week, was very successful and everyone enjoyed it!
We will read Pearl's First Prize Plant this week which will give us the opportunity to predict and infer while learning the naming parts of a sentence, words endings and short i words. Practicing these skills is something we highly recommend.
Word Wall Words: Each Monday, we will put 5 new word wall words on our Word Wall. Here is the updated list of word wall words that are on our Word Wall now: a, and, are, about, as, at, an, all, because, be big, by, can, did, down, do, for, first,  friend, from, find, go, have, he, here, his, had, him, her, has, how, I, in, is, it, if, know, like, little, my, me, made, many, most, make, more no, not, nice, of, on, one, once, play, said, see, she, that, the, they, this, to, up, when, where, why, was, want, with, who, what, you.  Helping your child learn these words will be a huge support to their reading. Once they know these words by sight, they can work on spelling them on their own as they are the most frequently used words in first grade. Flash cards are a great way to practice. Some children even have their own word walls in their rooms. It is great to have a Word Wall at home too and add the five new word wall words to it each week. This week's word wall words are going to be.... many, down, know, about, first
Math: We will be working in Chapter 6 which focuses on subtraction fact strategies. We will be discussing all the different strategies to use when taking some objects from a group of objects. We will give the children time to verbalize what strategy they a prefer using and how they use it.  Completing  Chapter 6 workbook pages in the Homework Book I gave you at Back to School Night and working with your flashcards daily will help. Please continue to work on addition facts nightly as we will be doing the same here each day.
Science: Your child is bringing home his/her Science Journal this week to share with you all he/she learned about out insect study. Enjoy reading through it together, write a comment in the book if you wish, and help your child remember to bring it back to school. We will continue to add to the Science Journal throughout the year.
We are continuing our nutritional study learning about the food groups.  Each week we will take a look at a different food group. Ask your child what groups we have learned about and how they are incorporating them into their diet. Thank you for completing and sending in your home nutrition survey. We had fun reviewing it.
