Week of September 26

Hi,

Welcome to my Room 6 blog. My hope is that by reading this blog, you will get a little peak into the fun and learning that is happening in our class! Our First Grade Team Blog, where you can get all the needed materials such as field trip forms, word wall word lists, Reading Logs, and more will be up and running soon.

Next week we will be working on summarizing stories which means we only tell the important parts and leaving out the details. We will also be focusing on story structure; beginning, middle, end, problem and solution. When you are reading to your child at home, take a minute to focus on story structure and summarizing as well.

We learned how to write all the lowercase letters the first grade way and are now half way though learning how to do the same with the capital letters.

We will read Jasper and the Beanstalk. It is a great story that leaves you hanging at the end so we will use the opportunity to write our own ending and then write our own story extension. It is a wonderful way for the children to use their creativity.

In science, we will continue our nutrition program learning about how important it is to eat healthy and exercise. I hope you all took at moment this week to go over the worksheet that came home and had a meaningful discussion about how your family works to be healthy.

We are having a great time at our Computer Lab each Monday. I wanted to let you know about some of the website we visit incase your child wants to do so at home as well.

PBSkids.com, Starfall.com, Houghton Mifflin website, Language Arts, Math and Science.

Your child may bring home math or pink worksheets that aren't finished. Although it is beneficial for your child to complete these pages at home, it is your choice, unless it says to return them to school. If you see your child has had a difficult time with a concept, it would be beneficial if you reviewed those pages with them.

Please review HM Math, Chapter 3 & 4 (addition) with your child using the green math book that was sent home at back to school night. We will be starting Chapter 5 on Sept. 26 and then working on Chapter 26.

Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers! We are so lucky to have so much help! We love having our volunteers come in and experience first grade with us! We want to thank those of you who are volunteering behind the scenes and tell you also how much we appreciate your help!

Our word wall words for this week will be.....where....if...made...him..school..

Have a fantastic weekend and I hope to see all of you tonight at the Harvest Festival!
