Happy Mother's Day to all you fabulous Moms out there! Enjoy your special day!
Language Arts: We will enjoy a story about a boy who spends some special time at his Grandparents' home remembering all the things his dad did there when he was a little guy. This story helps us practice the skills of sequencing and summarizing. We will spend time this week studying the /er/ sounds from er, ir, ur, wor, ear.
Science: We are start our study of matter this coming week.
Math: We will start Chapter 28 which deals with compare and order objects by length, height and weight. We will also work with estimating and measuring objects using non standard units. Have fun at home working on these concepts as well.
Choir: We are enjoying our second session with our choir teachers and will let you know when we have a date for our upcoming upcoming performance.
Homework Logs: Please complete your child's homework log daily writing down the book read and signing each day that your child has been working on math skills. This Homework Log is due each FRIDAY. Thanks to all of you who supported your child in our school's jog a thon. It is a great school event that is always a hit!
Language Arts: For the next two weeks, the students in the upper grades are doing state testing so we will not be having RTI classes. We will not be reading any new stories from Houghton Mifflin for the next two weeks and instead will use other reading sources to continue work with grammar, phonics and other language arts skills.
Choir: We are enjoying our second session with our choir teachers and our performance will be the evening of May 23rd. When I know more details, I will pass them along.

Friday this week is our annual Jog a Thon so please help your child remember to wear the right shoes and clothes.
Language Arts: This week we will read a story called The Surprise Family. It is a fun story about a chick who is very surprised to find out who his family is. This story will open up lots of opportunities for us to talk about the sequencing of a story and how the author uses tons of details in telling the story. Encouraging Independence: Can you believe that you almost have a second grader?! We are so close to the end of first grade now that this is a perfect time for you to help your child to spread his/her wings and INDEPENDENTLY pack his/her school supplies. As a parent, you can help your child each night by making sure he/she has checked that his/her backpack, supplies, snack and lunch is all set for the following school day.
Language Arts: This week we will read a story called The New Friend. It is a darling story about a family from Japan that moves into the neighborhood. This story will open up lots of opportunities for us to talk about how to welcome others and make them feel included. Our strategy focus is evaluating and our comprehension strategy is story structure (plot, setting, beginning, middle, end, problem and solution).
Science: We are continuing our habitat unit by exploring the forest. This week would be a great time to take a family walk in our local forest exploring all the plants and observing all animals. We will read many non fiction books about habitats and your child will use expository writing at the end of each week to write about what they learned about each habitat. We will enjoy a directed drawing lesson with the first graders in Room 7.
Math: We will review the concepts presented in Chapter 22 which focuses on telling time to the hour and half hour. It is time to get out those old fashioned wrist watches and round clocks so your child will have many opportunities to tell time using the same kind of clocks that we will be using here at school.

Welcome back to school. I hope you had a wonderful vacation and are ready the
third trimester. 44 days left of first grade! Crazy how fast this year went!

Our field trip to AHS was fun and the students learned a lot about what they have to look forward to when they reach high school! It isn't that far off!
NEEDS: AA batteries, tissue boxes, decks of playing cards and a Dominoe Game,
Language Arts: This week's story is called Johnny Appleseed and is a non fiction story about the life of John Chapman. This story gives us the opportunity to learn about predicting, inferring and drawing conclusions. Please practice these stategies at home too.
Science: We are continue our weather study this month. We are reading lots of non fiction books about all the different kinds of weather. Have fun listening to the meteorologist on the radio and tv. Also enjoy reading about the weather in our local newspaper.
Math: We will review the concepts presented in Chapter 21 which focuses on the value of coins. Great opportunity to empty your coin jars and purses at home to practice adding coins.
