Happy Fall!! It was great to see all of you at Back to School Night last night! I enjoyed sharing our program with you.

Language Arts- We will enjoy stories from our HM Reading Series. Our strategy focus is summarizing a story and our comprehension focus is story structure. We will have fun this week extending stories based on what we think will happen next.

Word Wall Words: Each Monday, we will put 5 new word wall words on our Word Wall. Here is the updated list of word wall words that are on our Word Wall now: a, and, are, as, at, an, because, be big, can, did, for, friend, from, find, go, have, he, here, his, had, him, her,  I, in, is, it, like, little, my, me, no, not, of, on, one, once, play, said, see, she, that, the, they, this, to, up,  when, where, why, was, want, with, who, what, you.  Helping your child learn these words will be a huge support to their reading. Once they know these words by sight, they can work on spelling them on their own as they are the most frequently used words in first grade. Flash cards are a great way to practice. Some children even have their own word walls in their rooms. It is great to have a Word Wall at home too and add the five new word wall words to it each week. This week's word wall words are going to be.... all, do, by, if, come

Handwriting: This week we will learn how to write capital letters. We will learn on a day since we have already learned how to write all of the lower case alphabet letters the "first grade way". Our “Magic C” letters all start with a c (starting at the top and going around and if needed, back down again without lifting the pencil).  The straight-line letters, except for “e”, all start at the top and go down, and back up (if needed) without lifting the pencil. Practicing daily at home will really help your child. Thanks in advance.

Math: We will be working in Chapter 4 which focuses on addition number sentences. We will focus on ways to make 7, 8, 9 and 10. We will learn how to add in vertical form, add with zero and how to draw a picture to go along with a number sentence. Completing the Chapter 4 workbook pages in the homework book I gave you at Back to School Night and working with your new flashcards daily will help.

Science: We will finish up our unit on insects this week. Look for your child's science journal to come home. Enjoy reading it together for one night and please help your child remember to bring it back to school the next day. We look forward to reading your comments.
We will start on study of seasons starting with fall. What a wonderful time of year!
