Happy Friday!

We had a great time celebrating filling in the incentive chart! They are well on their way to filling up the next one! Following the rules and being a good citizen really pays off!

Reminder: Thursday, September 19, is Back to School Night and I look forward to seeing all of you here! It is a great night for you to learn more about your child's day and sign up to become a volunteer in our class.

Exciting News: Did you hear about our classrrom visitors? Yes, the ants arrived! We are having a great time being scientist predicting, observing and then recording our findings. We are learning a lot about the similarities between ants and us!

Field Trip: I'm looking for drivers for a field trip to Aptos High on October 17. We are going to see a play that morning. The first parents who have completed forms for the trip will be my drivers.

Language Arts- We will enjoy stories from our HM Reading Series. Our strategy focus is monitoring and clarifying parts of the stories we read. Our comprehension focus is fantasy and realism. We will have fun reading deciding what parts of the stories we read are real or make believe! Doing this at home too will really help your child.

Word Wall Words: Each Monday, we will put 5 new word wall words on our Word Wall. Here is the updated list of word wall words that are on our Word Wall now: a, and, are, as, at, an, because, be big, can, did, for, friend, from, find, go, have, he, here, his, had, him, her,  I, in, is, it, like, my, me, no, not, of, on, one, play, said, see, she, that, the, they, this, to, up,  when, where, why, was, want, with, who, what, you.  Helping your child learn these words will be a huge support to their reading. Once they know these words by sight, they can work on spelling them on their own as they are the most frequently used words in first grade. Flash cards are a great way to practice. Some children even have their own word walls in their rooms. It is great to have a Word Wall at home too and add the five new word wall words to it each week. This week's word wall words are going to be.... do, because, little, one, once

Handwriting: We have learned how to write all of the lower case alphabet letters the "first grade way". Our “Magic C” letters all start with a c (starting at the top and going around and if needed, back down again without lifting the pencil).  The straight-line letters, except for “e”, all start at the top and go down, and back up (if needed) without lifting the pencil. Practicing daily at home will really help your child and for please look in your Thanks in advance.

Math: We will be working in Chapter 3 which focuses on putting together two groups or increasing to add as well as learning that a number sentence can tell about real-world situations.

PE:  Monday and Tuesdays so please make sure your child wears appropriate footwear  and clothing on those days.
